Gougane Barra Hotel, Macroom,
Co. Cork |
Description: Gougane Barra Hotel is situated by the shore of Gougane Barra Lake and enjoys an impressive panorama all around. This is due to its location in an unspoilt corrie valley among the mountains of Cork and Kerry which provides the source for the River Lee which flows into Cork City 40 Miles East. |
|
The hotel has been in the hands of the Cronin and Lucey family for generations. It was originally built by James Cronin on a site of a hunting and fishing lodge. This lodge was used in the Nineteenth Century by the English Gentry until it was passed onto the Cronin Family at the turn of the century. Much has changed since then, but the Cronin & Lucey Family still provide fine hospitality along with an atmosphere of good comfort and home based cooking to all those who pass through its doors.
It is easy to find the hotel in many of the tour guides and directories as Gougane Barra is known for its unspoilt beauty, National Forest Park, Angling, Hill & Road Walking, and, of course, St Finbarr who started his hermitage on the island in the lake.
The nearby lake, originally know as Loch Irce, provides the initial assembly of water from the many streams and rivers which flow down from the nearby hills of the Shehy and Derrynasaggart Mountain ranges. The lake has a natural reserve of native Brown Trout and angling by boat is complimentary to any guest of Gougane Barra Hotel. Coarse Angling is also available in the locality.
The National Forest Park (1 km) offers many fine walks as well as an abundance of flora and fauna. The nearby island contains the ruins of St. Finbarr's hermitage where many people come to experience the peace, tranquillity and Holiness of the place. A Pilgrimage to honour St. Finbarr is held usually on the last Sunday in September.
