Accommodation:
Fort Royal has been run by the same family since it opened as a hotel in 1948, and although many improvements and renovations have been carried out since, the same principles in hospitality are still used today.
There are many return visitors to the hotel which is easy to understand when you first come through the front gates.
Location:
The hotel is situated in 18 privately owned acres of mature trees, gardens and lawns of which the front one leads right down to the beach.
Fort Royal is also renowned for its award winning cuisine, friendly regular staff, comfortable bedrooms and lounges, and a very special home-from-home atmosphere. It is the perfect place to escape to for peace and tranquillity, or as a base to explore the fascinating county of Donegal.
Rooms:
There are 15 bedrooms in the hotel all with private bathroom and because of the design of the building all but 3 have a view of the sea.
All the bedrooms have a television and telephone and are furnished to a level of comfort and taste as befitting a country house hotel.
Five of the bedrooms are classed as superior, purely because they are slightly larger than the standard rooms.
Relax in the hotel's lounges and bar, all of which have log fires, antiques, fresh flowers and comfortable armchairs.
Food and Wine:
The hotel has a very good reputation for its fine cuisine, with the table d'hote dinner menu changing daily, depending on what raw ingredients are available and in season.
As you might expect with the seaside location, there is a daily supply of fresh fish, which when cooked simply is one of the highlights of the menu. There are also locally caught lobsters, scallops and mussels available throughout most of our season.
The hotel uses two award winning butchers from the nearby area, for the supply of all the meats, including Donegal mountain lamb. Fresh vegetables, fruit and herbs are brought in from the hotel's walled kitchen garden on a daily basis. Guests are encouraged to walk around the garden whenever they want.
Fort Royal has an RAC Dining Award, which is a good benchmark as to the high standards of quality and consistency the kitchen works to.
