JUNE

Sun 22nd : Togetherness
With just a handful of gigs under their belt, Togetherness were among the highlights of this year’s 12 Points! Festival, but it’s players will be familiar to anyone with a keen eye on the Dublin jazz scene, and its also a bellwether of the strength in jazz composition to be found in Ireland today. Setting aside the Hammond B3 and returning to the piano has stimulated some exemplary small group writing from Justin Carroll, characterized by shifts in meter, and performed by five musicians who clearly enjoy unpicking his rhythmic knots. Tenor saxophonist Michael Buckley now seems to have few impediments to melodic expression every time he plays, and he shares the stand here with a real voice for the future in fellow tenorman Matthew Halpin, while word is seeping out in the global jazz community about drummer Sean Carpio, and Simon Jermyn is evolving a very personal concept of the electric bass.

Sun 29th : Jonathon Kreisberg Trio
With six cds to his name plus a lengthy list of collaborations in the highest echelons of New York music, Jonathon Kreisberg is the embodiment of that city’s jazz guitar aesthetic. A flawless technique is deployed with understatement, allied to a sophisticated harmonic orbit that compliments buoyant legato playing and a warm tone, and heard in the context of his deft original compositions. His latest release South of Everywhere evokes the best work of fellow guitarists like Kurt Rosenwinkel, and has drawn effusive praise from sources like Jazztimes, as have his contributions to the working groups of musicians like vibraphonist Joe Locke and drummer Ari Hoenig. Jazz guitar aficionados shouldn’t miss his Dublin debut, where Kreisberg will be performing in trio with drummer David Little and bassist Damien Evans.

JUNE

Tue 24th : Ali & The DT's www.myspace.com/aliandthedts
Young Ali Moore himself, son of Peter of The International Blues Band fame, who displays no dissimilarity to his fathers irreverent ‘grab it by the balls’ attitude. The band has developed over the last couple of years to deliver a high energy, no nonsense and sometimes melodic set of blues adaptations. Described as music to make you top yourself would be a definite exaggeration more music to prevent you topping yourself. If you are and are not feeling suicidal be there. It won’t be the drink that will give you the DT’S!! Definitely up and coming!

The solid-groove rhythm section, with “Papa” Hynes on drums and Screamin’ Jay Mulally on bass, swings resolutely throughout while ace blues guitarist Junior Hynes sets pulses racing with fiery T-Bone Walker/B.B. With a wealth of experience behind them backing and supporting major Blues acts including Jimmy Rogers, Joe Louis Walker, Robben Ford, and Phil Guy to name but a few, Parchman Farm have notched up a string of credits to their name. Performing on the main stages of many major European blues Festivals including the Lillehammer Blues Festival in Norway, Utrecht Blues Festival in the Netherlands, Jedburgh Festival in Scotland, and appearing no less than three times on the prestigious International stage at the Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival, Parchman Farm are without doubt one of Ireland's most travelled and well-known blues bands abroad. Guitarist Pete McGowan's love and respect for the music has brought him to Chicago on more than one occasion where he has guested with Charlie Love in Kingston Mines, and with James Wheeler in Rosa's Lounge on Chicago's west side. More recently, Pete and Fran were invited on-stage by Johnny Drummer where they won the respect of both the musicians and the all-black audience in the legendary Lees Unleaded blues club situated on Chicago's south side. Parchman Farm's sound is a far cry from the heavy rock style that often passes for blues this side of the Atlantic, so if you want to hear a band whose music is firmly rooted in the true tradition of the blues and played straight from the heart, this is the band for you
