Athy Golf Club was formed in 1906. It was originally a 9-hole course that was later expanded to 18 holes in 1993. A lot of development work has also been carried out on the course to make it more challenging for golfers. The emphasis was on accuracy; so even after all the work, the length of the course has not increased by much.
The highlights of the course are holes 16 and 17 that are regarded as one of the most difficult consecutive holes anywhere. The last five holes of the course are quite demanding and golfers will have a tough time playing them. Even the last hole will remind you that you are up against a formidable test of golf as you plan your shots to evade the bunkers protecting the green here.
