The name Kildare is synonymous with the Sport of Kings and not only with racing the horses on the renowned Curragh Racecourse, but breeding the finest of equine thoroughbreds on the many prestigious stud farms in the county next door to Dublin. But golf and the K Club, hosting the Ryder Cup and the European Open, is emerging to share in the glory inherent in the green sward of County Kildare.
In the heart of this quality leisureland is Kildare town (the location of the National Stud); the Derby House Hotel occupies a landmark position. Its name honours the Irish Derby, the greatest racing and social event on the Curragh calendar.
Owned by Sarah Chan, the establishment had carried the name of the Curragh Lodge Hotel, but last year its original and favourite name was restored. The Derby House Hotel has 20 bedrooms which are in the process of refurbishment. It is a warm-hearted, cosy, family hotel with home-from-home feel and appeal. It attracts visitors from all over the world.
If you clean out the bookies at the Curragh or Naas racecourses, the large horseshoe bar has the capacity for a grand old celebration. Dining in style is one of the appealing virtues of the Derby House Hotel. The Kingsland Restaurant is a dominant facility where patrons can wine and dine on top quality Chinese and European cuisine. It is a luxurious scene of graciously appointed furnishings, and the enjoyable comfort of the deeply piled carpet.
The business conference room is directly adjacent to the bar by remarkable coincidence! If you wish to commit matrimony, the ballroom offers a pleasant facility for a stylish affair.
Kildare Town has gained in tranquillity since the motorway removed much of “the through traffic.” It is a vibrant element of Dublin’s commuter destinations and, with its iconic tourist attractions, such as the Japanese Gardens, it will not only survive, but thrive.
Located in the town centre, the Derby House Hotel now incorporates Kingsland Restaurant offering Chinese and European cuisine.
