History lovers visiting County Offaly should definitely pay a visit to Clonmacnoise on the east bank of River Shannon, one of the most important ancient sites of Ireland.
Destroyed by English troops in 1552, what remains here is a castle, eight churches, two round towers and lots of monumental slabs. An exhibition, an educational film and tearooms round out the visitor centre, making it one of County Offaly’s top attractions.
No trip to County Offaly would be complete without a visit to Birr, a town well-known for its Georgian heritage. Birr is perhaps most famous for its Norman castle. Even though the castle is not open to the public, tourists to Offaly still visit in great numbers for the magnificent gardens surrounding it.
Other castles worth visiting in Offaly include Kinnitty Castle and Leap Castle.
